Three Questions to Ask your Mobile Testing Partner

In 2008, there were less than a thousand apps available through the iTunes store. Today, that number tops 1.2 million. There are more than a billion smartphones currently in use worldwide, with new devices being launched every single week. However, for those tasked with bringing a product to market, automated mobile testing isn’t widely adopted at this time.

The major drawback to automated mobile testing is the inability to replicate and repeat a test across multiple devices and operating systems. Although there are automated tests which will put a device or application through its paces, it becomes laborious and time intensive (and hence, more expensive) to set up that test to run on a majority of the options currently in use. Does Your Smart Car Pass the Test? VeriTestAF’s Impact on Connected Cars

It’s no longer uncommon to ask your car for directions, take a call hands-free while driving, or control the radio with speech commands. In fact, in-car technologies are so popular that by 2015, it’s predicted that 20 percent of vehicles sold globally will have embedded connectivity and 50 percent will be tethered or integrated to a smartphone.

But before these “smart cars” are brought to market, manufacturers must ensure that the complex telematics and “infotainment” technology systems perform with the highest level of quality – after all, some systems provide on-the-go security and safety, which makes testing that much more critical. That’s why identifying a proven testing partner is essential to reducing risk and increasing reassurance when bringing potentially life-saving automotive technology to fruition.

At Lionbridge, we leverage our highly customizable VeriTestAF technology and a team of highly-skilled testing experts – both in the lab and in the field — to validate a range of technology components. These include global application testing, on-location field testing, UI localization, operating system integration, and many others. We’re able to test the full lifecycle of an in-car technology device or application, then replicate that test across multiple devices and platforms, to make the end product seamless and available across multiple languages and devices. This helps automotive manufacturers feel confident that the in-car technology they’re incorporating into a wide variety of models operates properly – not just the first time, but every time, and for both drivers and car owners across the globe.

Here are two real-world examples of VeriTestAF’s current impact on the connected car:

  • Field testing a mobile app: Lionbridge’s field engineering team was deployed to validate various performance aspects of a new mobile application from a leading Fortune 100 U.S. auto insurance firm. The app will be used to track driver safety habits to determine discount eligibility. The goal of this project was to verify the performance of the application under a variety of weather and road conditions, and on multiple devices.
  • Lab testing software and hardware: Our engineers recently went “off road” into a lab setting, where they meticulously worked to test multiple components of the software and hardware behind a popular virtual assistant technology offered by the automotive industry’s largest speech recognition software provider. The end goal: ensuring that regardless of the driver’s location, their in-car navigation system would lead them to the right spot every time.

As we buckle up and enter the era of the connected car, it’s important for the technology within the automobile to function effectively 100 percent of the time. At this stage of adoption, a failure to function properly could undermine an automotive provider’s credibility with the public, negatively impacting long-term growth opportunities. However, selecting the right testing partner will ensure a smooth ride now and down the road.
